Point-to-Point Protocol
   Abbreviated PPP. A TCP/IP protocol used to transmit IP datagrams over serial lines and dial-up telephone point-to-point connections. PPP allows a PC to establish a temporary direct connection to the Internet via modem and appear to the host system as if it were an Ethernet port on the host's network.
   PPP provides router-to-router, host-torouter, and host-to-host connections and also provides an automatic method of assigning an IP address so that mobile users can connect to the network at any point.
